AHS LINK Internship
LINK (Leading Internships for New Knowledge) is a program offered at Animas High School to help students explore the career fields they're interested in, getting hands on experience. Normally, it is supposed to be an experience for juniors where they complete 90-120 hours of internship work within a three week period, but with the COVID-19 pandemic, that shifted a bit for the 2021 class. From our spring semester of our junior year throughout our senior year, we were able to complete our internship requirements.

My Internship
I interned with Amber Andrew at Durango Like A Local (DLAL).
DLAL is an online blog that serves as an informational site for tourists visiting Durango covering the best activities (indoor and outdoor), the best spots to eat, and hidden gems around our town. I was drawn to this internship because of the passion I found in my journalism class. I love writing and saw this as an opportunity to learn more about what journalism looks like outside the typical newspaper job. |
My Project
My project for this project was writing blog posts for the DLAL site. I completed six blog posts total and worked on organization and data collection on the side as other internship responsibilities. All of my blog posts compiled can be found on the document to the right.

Reflection
While I enjoyed the learning opportunity to see what a job in journalism might look like outside of a paper, I don't think that I would ever want to work at a small blog like the one I interned at. Doing the work and writing was fun, but I felt bored writing by the end because the topics were restricted to Durango (as they should be considering it's a blog for Durango tourists). I'm glad that I had the opportunity to learn this about myself and also gain some skills in diversifying my writing as well as learning how content is prioritized and received on the internet, and some more about branding businesses. While I don't see myself ever working in a job like this, I know that it gave me a lot of information I need to be successful and completely understand the journalism world. I'm excited to study journalism at CU Boulder through their CMCI college moving forward next year and building my future career more.
